3rd International Sustainability Workshop: Gender Equality with the focus Women in Science

The Sustainability Initiative of the University of Cologne, which is carefully supported by the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) Germany Chapter and the Materials Research Society (MRS) University Chapter, organized a workshop titled: Gender Equality – Women in Science. Indeed, a highly discussed topic nowadays, which spans a wide range of occupations. 80 participants from all over the world, just to name few: Italy, Switzerland, Canada, Hungary, Spain, Nigeria, Sweden, Ghana, America and England, joined in this workshop.

“Is the gender gap still a topic in the academia world, in particular for women in science, and what can we do to tackle this problem in a constructively way?” – was one of the profound questions that were asked during the workshop.

In this workshop a group of high-level scientists’ women springs from academia and industry, including a representative of UN WOMEN, to share and discuss their experiences whenever they encounter any difficulties in their careers. Their motivating stories and opinions on how they moved up in their career and managed their work-life balance to be successful in their professional work and handle the family besides. This extrapolated a portrait of what barriers women encountered in science in the past, but also what challenges and stereotypes are still to be overcome, striving to close the gap!

The overall goal of this workshop was to encourage young women not to hold back and follow their dreams!

International Workshop on Advanced Materials Challenges for Health and Alternative Energy Solutions (AMAES-VIIII)

Following the very successful NANOmed Summer and Winter School series that was established in 2016 in Germany, the Winter School 2020 was organized as fifth consecutive School, this time for the first time in China. From January 10th until January 16th, all participants of the Winter School had the chance to discuss current state-of-the-art technologies for renewable energy sources and health applications and additionally got in contact with the Chinese culture, tea and food.

As a continuous tradition during the last years, all Winter School attendees also had the chance to participate in the 21st International Symposium on Eco-materials Processing and Design (ISEPD2020), which was held from January 12 to 15, 2020 in Yantai, China. A wide variety of eco-material topics were covered in the program with several parallel sessions and plenary lectures to discuss the most recent innovations, trends, challenges and solutions adopted for greener technological solutions. All participants had the opportunity to give a talk on their recent research results and discuss their scientific achievements with international professionals. Especially, advanced energy conversion and storage topics, as well as environmental protection materials have been widely discussed and potential cooperation partners in the field of water splitting and hydrogen production were identified.
One of the major aspects of this meeting was set onto sustainability, which nowadays plays a critical role not only in Germany and China, but worldwide. As part of the Cologne Winter School, a Sino-German workshop was therefore organized on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were defined by the United Nations in 2015 to make the world a more sustainable place by 2030. Within this workshop, participants learned in gamification events on the content of the SDGs that cover besides environmental issues such as climate change also societal aspects related to poverty, hunger and peace and economical aspects like sustainable growth and innovation. Interactive sessions allowed all participants to vividly discuss on sustainability issues they are facing during their research but also during their everyday life and finished with a brainstorming session of what everyone of us could change in the future.
